This 200+ mile tour travels the southern half of the Blue Ridge Parkway — and includes dramatic vistas from Mt Mitchell, Mt Pisgah, Little Switzerland, and Black Balsam (the highest point along the Parkway).
The five day itinerary ends in Cherokee, the southern terminus of the Parkway, and is a beautiful alternative to riding the entire Parkway in one vacation.
When you cycle the Blue Ridge Parkway, your ride is uninterrupted by traffic signals or stop signs. Commercial vehicles are not allowed, which means that you can focus on the ride, the view, and the wildlife. And your interesting tour mates.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a national treasure created as part of Franklin D. Roosenvelt’s New Deal to help pull the country, and more specifically the people of Appalachia, out of the Great Depression. It is American’s longest linear and most visited park.
During this tour, you will be delighted by stunning ridge-top views, historic homesteading sites, rock formations and native plant and wildlife. You will stay in small mountain villages and towns along the route, sampling regional food and listening to folk music of the area.
Overnight accommodations will range from comfortable mountain retreat locations to the sights and sounds of Asheville. This tour is limited to 10 guests.
Day 1 – 25 Miles
You will meet your tour mates for breakfast in Black Mountain, NC at the Monte Vista Hotel. While you finish eating, we’ll load up the bicycles in our custom trailer. We’ll review safety procedures and go over the general flow of the trip.
We’ll drive in the VGR luxury van to the mountain town of Blowing Rock, NC. Upon arrival, you will have an opportunity to take a short spin covering about 25 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This will give you a chance to check your bike and your legs before the riding begins in earnest.
Day 2 – 42 Miles
We will ride from the resort to continue our progress south along the parkway. Prepare for a spectacular experience as you cross the Linn Cove Viaduct and experience the “extra mile” the best way possible — by bicycle. Pass by Grandfather Mountain and roll toward the mountain village of Little Switzerland. Our inn is located just a couple pedal strokes from the parkway and is situated on the edge of a ridge that offers a lovely view. We will relax and dine at our inn before preparing for our grand arrival in Asheville.
Day 3 – 41 Miles
After a delicious breakfast at the inn, we will start riding toward Mount Mitchell and you will have the option of climbing to the tallest spot east of the Mississippi River. Mount Mitchell stands at 6,683’ and, while not part of the Blue Ridge Parkway, it’s hard to pass up the opportunity to tackle this climb.
From this point on, the route is mostly downhill (really). You will pass through Craggy Garden where you will have views of the Burnett Reservoir and a rhododendron forest. A short spin along Elk Mountain Scenic Highway will take us to our destination for the evening.
Day 4 – 35 Miles
A hearty breakfast will be served at the inn and then we will continue to descend into Asheville before beginning the long climb up Mount Pisgah. The total mileage for the day may seem low, but you will have earned a good meal when you roll into the Pisgah Inn to complete the ride for the day. Stunning views will greet you from both sides of the ridgeline as you climb into the clouds.
Day 5 – 62 Miles
Today we will ride from the inn to complete our tour of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Be prepared for more ridgeline views as we pass Devil’s Courthouse and reach the highest point on the parkway, Richland Balsam before taking a roller coaster ride to the final milepost in Cherokee. The VGR van will transport you back to the finish at The Monte Vista Hotel in Black Mountain.
All VGR tours, include support by the VGR luxury Sprinter van and trailer, with delicious and abundant food, iced drinks, and shade from the sun. Your bike never rides on top of a vehicle, but secure within our custom trailer. We carry spares, parts, and tools should there be a problem with your bike.
Unless otherwise stated, the cost of alcoholic beverages is not included in your tour package.
