Cycle to Farm® is a popular series of organized cycling events that encourage and promote local farmers, local farms and agritourism by bicycle in the South.
This is the fifth year the ride has been offered in Black Mountain, and for the first time we’ll be starting (and finishing) right in the center of downtown Black Mountain on Saturday, July 16.
As you ride from farm to farm, you’ll be offered tasty samples prepared by the farmers — and the opportunity to buy their products, produce and wares. Volunteers will haul your purchases back to the Finish, so that you can keep riding to the next farm. The route is a challenging metric century (100 kilometers, or about 62 miles). And because this is Western North Carolina, you’ll get plenty of challenging climbs, rushing descents, and beautiful country roads.
New Belgium will be back again for the Fabulous After Party when you return, serving up delicious draft beer, a perfect complement to the handmade pizza baked in a wood-fired oven on site (Chef Mark is upping his game, with a new oven for 2016).
The downtown start means that riders can stay in one of the hotels or B&Bs, or rental house and ride to the Start! White Horse Black Mountain is also putting on a concert that same evening, with discounted tickets for riders and volunteers.
Black Mountain Greenways receives the profit from the event. Of course, local farmers benefit substantially from the chance to meet riders face-to-face, sell product, and show off their beautiful land.
We also view the involvement of volunteers and sponsors as an opportunity to build community among foodies, athletes, and local farmers. We encourage them all to join us at the Fabulous After Party.
Can’t make it on July 16, or want to ride two different Cycle to Farm routes? Check out Cycle To Farm Sandy Mush NC on October 1.

Day 1 – Friday July 15
Spend the weekend in Black Mountain and create a mini-vacation filled with all the best things that this town has to offer.
But, don’t delay…rooms are reserved quickly, especially at event headquarters, The Monte Vista Hotel. It sells out every year.
Packet pick-up will be held at the Monte Vista Hotel on Friday afternoon. Stop by to get your bib number and your rider goodie bag; avoid the lines on Saturday morning.
Stay to enjoy live music, dinner and drinks in this lovingly restored landmark of Black Mountain. Or take a stroll through town and sample the many possibilities for dining, local craft beer, and live music.
Day 2 – Saturday July 16
*New Start Location* The Cycle To Farm Metric Century begins at 8:00 AM at Town Square Park located in the heart of Black Mountain. Be sure to show up much earlier if you need your packet, and to enjoy coffee by Dynamite Roasting and other amusements while you’re getting ready to roll!
This challenging route will take you to five local farms where culinary treats will await, along with products for sale. Don’t worry, we’ll haul your goodies back to the Finish for you.
At the end of your ride, enjoy the Fabulous After Party featuring New Belgium brews, live music, and a farm-to-table meal by Fresh Wood Fired Pizza and Pasta. You can meet more of the Cycle to Farm community — we invite volunteers, first responders, and sponsors to join us in celebrating local farmers.
Day 3 – Sunday July 17
You’ve earned the chance to sleep in today. When you arise, visit Dynamite Roasting for the best, freshly roasted coffee. Breakfast can be found at Louise’s, Roots & Fruits, Blue Ridge Biscuit, or The Artisan Gourmet Market. Take advantage of the hiking trails in Montreat, or visit downtown Asheville for an eclectic shopping experience.
Whatever you chose to do, don’t rush through the day. Enjoy your Black Mountain adventure.
