There’s something about cyclists that makes them seek out challenges…the harder, the better. So it’s no surprise that an organized cycling event with “misery” in the name would be celebrating the 18th anniversary on May 24, 2015 with what is certain to be a sell-out field of avid and accomplished cyclists.
Many who line up for Mountains of Misery will be fully aware of the challenge that lies ahead. And others will be spinning this route for the first time.
Rookie or veteran, all will find misery along this route reaching the Top of the World (the finish line at Mountain Lake Lodge).
For the 2015 event, Velo Girl Rides will again offer a unique opportunity to travel in style to this group event as a team:
#1 As a member of the Velo Girl Rides Misery Loves Company Team, you and your bicycle and gear will ride in the VGR van and trailer from Asheville NC to Blacksburg VA. (And back on Monday morning). No driving, no hassles, and lots of laughter with teammates.
#2 The MLC Team will stay in the Mountain Lake Lodge located at the finish line. We’ll be here the night before, and the night after. The morning of the event, the VGR Van & Trailer will transport you to the Start (about 7 miles away).
#3 When you finish, all the other riders will be taking buses back to the Start, and then driving their cars back to their hotels in Blacksburg… while you can simply walk from the Finish to your hot shower, delicious dinner, and sleep.
NOTE: You must register for Mountains of Misery separately through IMAthelete. Registration for both the Century and the Double-Metric Century opens on February 1, 2015 and it will sell out before Valentine’s Day. So sign up there, and then sign up with us, and you’re set for the Misery Loves Company Team!
Day 1 – Saturday, May 23, 2015
We will meet you in the morning in Black Mountain, NC at the Town Square. While you’re greeting your tour mates, we’ll load your bicycle into our custom trailer. We’ll ride in the Velo Girl Rides luxury van to the charming college town of Blacksburg VA.
Once we arrive in Blacksburg, we will enjoy a group lunch before visiting East Coasters Bike Shop for MoM packet pick-up, and last minute supplies.
Then we will reboard the VGR van for the trip to Mountain Lake Lodge which is located in Pembroke VA about 20 miles west of Blacksburg. After checking into the lodge, there will be time for last minute tweaks to bicycles and gear before enjoying dinner at the lodge, and turning in early for a good night’s rest.
Day 2 – Sunday, May 24, 2015
A grab & go continental breakfast will be waiting for you when you awake in the morning. The MLC Team will load into the van for the short descent down to the Start.
The van and trailer, along with all the VGR equipment (air pumps, tools, parts) will be available to you at the Start. Once the ride begins, the van and trailer will be parked at the Finish, awaiting your return where it will serve as the Misery Loves Company Team Headquarters until all your team mates have finished.
After recuperating in your room, rejoin the MLC Team for a celebratory dinner in the lodge, and watch the sun set on an awesome accomplishment.
And then, blessed sleep (we’ve found that it’s not a great idea to drive back to NC on the same day as this demanding event).
Day 3 – Monday, May 25, 2015
Before returning to Western North Carolina, we will enjoy a Blacksburg favorite – breakfast at Gillie’s Resturant in the heart of this college town. Here you just might bump into some of the New River Valley Bicycle Club members who make Mountains of Misery happen each year (we’re not the only ones who know where to eat breakfast after a big ride!).
You may want to ask them to shorten that last climb, but they will tell you that only erosion will honor that request.
We’ll then hit the road, and be back in Asheville before you know it. The van is often quiet on this return trip, for some reason.
