We offer Ashville Custom Bike Tours ranging from a single day to two weeks, and encompassing a wide variety of locations, attractions, activities and dining.
We have clients seeking a “personal” Cycle to Farm® experience with a gentle elevation profile and numerous breaks to take pictures and enjoy fabulous food.
And we have other clients that crave the challenge of hammering the Blue Ridge Parkway in less than 5 days (120+ mile days).
We create beautiful cycling experiences, no matter what your goals. Talk to us, and we’ll make them happen.
Love our tours, but can’t make our dates work? If you have just three other riders to join you, we can usually offer a scheduled tour… on dates that work better for you.
Time of year, route and other specifics can make a difference in price, but usually we’re in the general ballpark.
When we say “custom” please do not hear “premium pricing” — frankly, we charge about the same for our custom tours as our scheduled tours. The difference is that you choose the date.
That Looks Steep!
Nervous about descents? Been a while since you’ve ridden long hours in the saddle? Nervous about your clip-in shoe cleats?
Velo Girl Rides specializes in people returning to riding after a long absence (such as raising a family or building a career).
Or first time riders moving from another sport such as mountain biking, running, and triathlons.
There are no foolish questions — we learn more every day about how to ride more efficiently, more safely, and with greater control. And we’re happy to share, and ease you into this fabulous low-impact sport.
You’ll be stronger and having more fun in no time — indeed increased fitness and skills come quickly on the bike.
If your climbing legs are a little rusty, we can find a gentle tour of forest and farmland. And if you’re ready to climb, we’ll enjoy a traverse of classic Western North Carolina ridgelines, valleys and remote coves rich in Appalachian tradition.
When we ride the WNC mountains off the Parkway, the climbs are usually steeper, and the descents challenging… and we’ll take you to hidden gems including farms, small towns, and rushing creeks.
In other words, we have the terrain you need (and want).
Meeting Farmers at Farms
Speaking of farms, if you’d like to meet the Farmer who raised the stock or grew the vegetables you’ll eat in one of Asheville’s many renowned restaurants emphasizing local ingredients, we can arrange a private, intimate version of our famous Cycle to Farm® experience.
And then we’ll take you to dinner, where you can meet the chef. Think of it as a new kind of Farm-to-Table… by bicycle… for a small group.
On Your Own (Kind of)
If you prefer to explore this beautiful region on your own, without a guide… we understand.
And understand this is far easier to do when we haul your luggage (right to your room), arrange your lodging, and provide for your meals… you tell us where and when, and we take care of the rest.
What About Mountain Biking?
If dirt and mountain is your preference, we can set you up with an excellent mountain bike guide service.
You can bring your bike, or we can help arrange a rental for you — and even pick it up for you in advance of your arrival if you’re pressed for time. See more about bikes here.
Anything is possible, your imagination (and ours) is the only limit. Just get in touch with us, and we’ll explore your options.
This city is known by some as the Paris of the South. While we might not go that far, we can attest to the stunning array of innovative and traditional dining, modern and folk art, a wide range of live music performance, and natural beauty in every direction. Asheville is a frequent entry on “Best cities to live in…” lists and surveys.
As you consider what you might do in the evenings, or rest days, during a bike-centered visit to Asheville… you might even find the choices a bit overwhelming (don’t worry, we’ll help). There’s a reason why Asheville is so popular:
The largest private residence in America is located a few minutes from downtown, with tours and attractions on the 8,000 acre Biltmore Estate. If you’re a fan of Downton Abbey, or have ever been curious about how the fabulously wealthy live, consider a visit.
Innovative and unique architecture can be found throughout the city, including the Flat Iron building (pictured), the Grove Park Inn, and the Biltmore Estate itself. The city is truly a retreat for artists and writers, and the architecture seems to benefit from that tradition.
Asheville is a favorite destination for national tours, as well as festivals spanning Blues, Jazz, Bluegrass, Folk, Classical, and Rock and Roll. Venues range from small bars and lounges, to full concert hall seating. Buskers on the streets of downtown bring music to a different kind of venue: accessible to all and asking only for a small donation.
Asheville chefs tend to collaborate as much as compete to bring locally-sourced food to your table, ranging from rabbit, chicken, pig and beef to vegetables and fruit. Innovations such as moonshine (the legal type) distilled from heritage corn (verified to be from strains grown hundreds of years ago) and cider pressed from local apple varieties, the spirit of innovation combined with the tradition of farming is a unique experience.
Asheville is also a center of craft brewing, developing a nationwide reputation for its breweries large and small. One of the real treats for a craft beer lover is the accessibility of the smaller breweries in Asheville… meet the brewer, and sip your beer in the shadow of the tanks it was made in.
Asheville has attracted a mix of young people (University of North Carolina Asheville is walking distance from the downtown), retirees seeking the cultural and musical offerings of the region, and families seeking a more balanced lifestyle to raise children. You’ll see all of those, and more at the Friday night tradition: the spontaneous drum circle in the heart of the downtown. Just bring a drum. Yes, Velo Girl Rides can provide those too.
At Velo Girl Rides, we relish the opportunity to combine your interests in Asheville with your bike tour — after all its why we moved here too! Let us know what you’re interested in, how much time you have, and we’ll put together a unique combination of on- and off-the-bike adventures in Asheville for you.
We can also accommodate non-riding spouses and family members. The Asheville area offers a terrific opportunity for couples and families, coming together at the end of the day after separate adventures. Yes, we can help.
WE’LL COME TO YOU
We’ll pick you up where you’re staying in our luxury Velo Girl Rides Sprinter van, and your bike comes too — inside a trailer specially-built for keeping your bike safe.
The VGR Sprinter has high-capacity air conditioning, shoulder belts for every passenger, and 6’4″ interior headroom for the tall folks in your party.
You may not even need a rental car — leave the driving to us.
SUPPORT AND SAFETY
You will be fully-supported at all times with a friendly SAG (Support and Gear) vehicle carrying supplies, food, fluids, ice, first aid equipment, and of course, encouragement.
You may choose to ride in the SAG vehicle at any time, for any reason.
Given that mixing bicycles and motor vehicles is always dangerous, we take safety seriously at Velo Girl Rides.
We’ll be talking with you in detail about Safety, both what we can do to help, and the choices you can make to be safe on your bike. If the worst happens, we are certified for first aid, CPR, and often have an EMT along too. We carry an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) in one of the SAG vehicles.
If you have questions about safety — please ask.
A guide will ride with you, to help ensure your safety (and keep you on the route). Your guides are there to help you with the inevitable issues that come up on a ride — large or small.
Our guides have a collective 65 years of riding experience, and each will tell you that they moved to Asheville from somewhere else… on purpose. They love it here, and have made it their job to know it well. So you’ll have help whether it means changing a tire, or choosing where to eat tonight.
We’ve found that riders like information: navigating the route, understanding the challenges in miles and climbs, and what will be encountered during the ride. We start each ride and tour with a detailed safety briefing, where we’ll remind you of the legal requirements… and the common sense safety procedures we use. And, we’ll tell you what to expect along your journey.
And we like to keep your experience small, manageable and fun — the maximum number of riders is 12. And we like to laugh… we hope you do too.
Contact us for a quote for your custom tour, whether one day or two weeks.
In general, our custom pricing is the same as our scheduled pricing, provided you have a sufficient number of riders.
THE LEGAL STUFF
Yes, Velo Girl Rides is insured. We’ll also ask you to read, understand, and sign our Liability Agreement (PDF Download) which indicates you understand bicycle riding is dangerous and risky, and that you are assuming that risk as part of your cost of participating in a tour with us. Seriously, please download the PDF and read it before you come play with us.
